Merete, born in Denmark with a background in contemporary art history (holding a Masters), is an interdisciplinary visual artist and doctoral candidate at the Queensland College of Art and Design, Meanjin (Brisbane). Her focus lies in exploring how ecological breakdown reshapes our understanding of the world and our role in it. Merete's research delves into the intersection between sculpture, installation, sound, video, ecology, and art history, aiming to create a meaningful connection between an audience and the more-than-human world. Her installation practice utilises the theoretical essence of vital materialism and Actor Network Theory (ANT), and her work employs a light-hearted, non-didactic, and non-confrontational visual language. Merete emphasises that the non-human world deserves the same agency as humans, advocating for its voice to be heard and cared for. Residing on Quandamooka Country, she acknowledges that the sovereignty of this land was never ceded. 2011 Winner of the Queensland Regional Art Award, State Library of Queensland, Brisbane Judge: Michele Helmrich, UQ Art Museum Accompanying catalogue Finalist in the Fleurieu Landscape Prize Accompanying catalogue 2014 One of fourteen participants in Place & Practice, Regional Arts Australia National Visual Arts Showcase 2014, Parliament House, Canberra Highly commended in the Milburn Art Prize by Heiser Gallery director Bruce Heiser One of four participants in Jan Manton’s exhibition at Metro Arts Platform 2014 https://www.metroarts.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/MA_Jan-Manton-Art_Platform-2014.pdf 5 works were acquired for the collection of the new Queensland Children's Hospital, Meanjin Finalist in the Redland Art Awards 2014 Griffith Award for Academic Excellence for studies in the Bachelor Of Fine Art 2015 Duo exhibition This Ur with Anya Swan at The Hold Artspace, Meanjin Griffith Award for Academic Excellence for studies in the Bachelor Of Fine Art 2016 Group exhibition Plenty Earth Arts and RONA16 exhibition, Brisbane Powerhouse Accompanying catalogue Griffith Award for Academic Excellence for studies in the Bachelor of Fine Art 2017 Group exhibition Mirroring Minjerribah at Jugglers Art Space, Meanjin Accompanying catalogue Finalist in the churchie national emerging art prize 2017 at the QUT Art Museum, Meanjin 2018 Group exhibition Earth Arts and RONA18 - Rights of Nature National Arts Exhibition, Spring Hill Reservoirs, Meanjin 2019 Group exhibition Tidal at Redland Art Gallery, Cleveland Duo exhibition On What Remains with Miriam Salomon at M-Arts Precinct, Murwillumbah 2020 Solo exhibition Life out of Balance at the Project Gallery, Queensland College of Art, Meanjin Group exhibition Voices for Nature 2020, Vacant Assembly, Meanjin Group exhibition Tidal Collective at Caboolture Hub Gallery Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) 2021 Group exhibition QCA HDR Represent at the POP Gallery, Meanjin 2022 Solo exhibition Moving to Higher Ground at the Webb Gallery, Queensland College of Art, Meanjin 2023 Solo exhibition Re-thinking Habitat at Outer Space Window Gallery, Meanjin 2024 Solo exhibition Can you hear us? at the Bomb Shelter, The Condensery – Somerset Regional Gallery, Queensland |
